Design vision for the pharmaceuticals industry

This washroom refurbishment project was undertaken for a leading pharmaceuticals facility with a clear objective: to create a space that meets the industry’s rigorous hygiene standards while delivering a modern, comfortable and durable environment for staff and visitors.

The design approach combined clinical-level hygiene performance with contemporary aesthetics, focusing on long-lasting materials, ease of maintenance and user comfort. Every surface, fixture and fitting was carefully selected to minimise bacterial growth, enhance cleaning efficiency, and sustain a fresh, modern appearance over time.

The result is a high-specification washroom that balances functionality and visual appeal, fully aligned with the pharmaceutical sector’s commitment to cleanliness, efficiency and operational excellence.

To achieve a clean, durable, and hygienic finish throughout, Altro wall cladding has been applied to all exposed wall surfaces. This proven, high-performance system offers a hygienic alternative to ceramic tiles, being impact-resistant, impermeable and grout-free, ensuring ease of cleaning and long-term durability. Ideal for critical hygiene environments, it supports a sterile and compliant design ethos. Complemented by wall-mounted soap dispensers, the refurbishment successfully balances functionality, durability and comfort, perfectly aligning with the high standards of the pharmaceuticals industry.

For the flooring, a stone-effect non-slip safety floor was selected for its premium appearance, durability and ease of maintenance. Installed with a cap and cove skirting detail, the design creates a smooth, curved transition between the wall and floor, eliminating dirt traps and enhancing hygiene. The result is a modern, seamless aesthetic capable of withstanding high-traffic usage while maintaining a safe, non-slip surface.

The toilet cubicle system has been manufactured from Polyrey compact-grade laminate in Teck Carbone, providing exceptional strength, water resistance and longevity. The design incorporates coordinating vanity frames fitted with modern, seamless bowl wash troughs, infra-red sensor taps and integrated soap dispensers - all chosen for energy efficiency and hygiene control.

Where hygiene meets a modern, contemporary design

Each vanity area is enhanced with black-framed mirrors, creating a striking contrast against the contemporary finishes. The Polyrey material benefits from Sanitized® antibacterial technology, effectively eliminating 99.9% of bacteria and supporting infection control in compliance with pharmaceutical hygiene requirements.

The toilet pans are of a traditional, robust design, equipped with low-level concealed cisterns, featuring single-flush, water-efficient mechanisms for sustainability and ease of maintenance.

The wash troughs, constructed from Mirant resin, feature seamless joints for superior hygiene, eliminating crevices where bacteria can accumulate. These are paired with infrared (touch-free) electric taps that include an adjustable duty flush (pre-set to run for 60 seconds every 24 hours after last use) to prevent Legionella formation. The taps are also equipped with scale-resistant flow straighteners, further enhancing performance and hygiene reliability in a pharmaceutical-grade setting.
